When I was about six years old, I was still pretty grossed out by boys and worried about the prospect of having to marry one in my adult future. Weighing my options, I asked my mom if it would be okay with her if I decided to marry a girl instead. She responded “Laura, I don’t care if you marry a boy or a girl, or even which religion you choose…but if you get a tattoo you’re getting kicked out of the house.”
My mom raised me to believe unequivocally in GLBT rights as though those rights were my own (we’ll have to work on “rights of the tattooed” in her next life.) She always encouraged outspoken acceptance and was never, ever ashamed of her beliefs. When I met Ben, I knew I’d found a partner who shared the same outspoken level of tolerance and belief in equality for the GLBT community that I was raised with, and I’ve watched him voice those beliefs loudly over the past several months of his heartfelt campaign.
